Abstract
Purpose: This study analyzed the relationship between the level of education, lifestyle, health education status, and chronic disease prevalence of visually impaired people in Korea.

Method: Using the raw data of the 2017 survey on the disabled by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, data of 680 visually impaired people were analyzed.

Results :According to the level of education there were significant differences in the areas of smoking (p<0.001), drinking (p<0.001), exercise (p<0.05), balanced nutrition intake (p<0.001), the awareness of the need for rehabilitation exercise (p<0.05) and the need for an exercise instructor (p<0.05). The higher the level of education, the higher the frequency of drinking and smoking; exercise frequency; balanced nutrition intake; awareness of need for rehabilitation exercise; and the need for trained exercise instructors. The prevalence of both hypertension and osteoarthritis were the highest in the no schooling through 6th grade (61.3% and 36.1%, respectively), but there was no difference in the prevalence of diabetes. After adjusting for gender and age, the risk of osteoarthritis was 5.88 times (95% CI 25.776-1.339) from no schooling through 6th grade and 5.36 times (95% CI 24.119-1.191) in the group of high school graduates comparison result based on college graduates or higher.

Conclusion: The difference in the prevalence of hypertension, and osteoarthritis according to the level of education of the visually impaired was significant. This suggests that the need for systematic and specific health education to improve lifestyle and policies which are suitable for the different groups of educational levels and different health challenges to prevent chronic diseases among the visually impaired of Korea.
